In 1922, Nosferatu introduced the world to Count Orlok—one of cinema’s creepiest vampires. But did you know this horror classic was never supposed to exist?
F.W. Murnau and Prana Film wanted to adapt Bram Stoker’s Dracula but didn’t bother getting permission. They changed a few names (Dracula became Orlok, Harker became Hutter), moved the story to Germany, and hoped no one would notice.
Well, Florence Stoker did notice. She sued, won, and had a German court order every copy of Nosferatu to be destroyed. Thankfully, some prints survived, or we wouldn’t have one of the most iconic horror films of all time. Meanwhile, Universal played it safe—paying Stoker’s estate $20,000 for the rights to make their 1931 Dracula starring Bela Lugosi.
But Nosferatu wasn’t the only game-changer. Stoker’s Dracula inspired so many adaptations that defined horror through the decades.
